19-year-old burglar banged up for stealing groceries

A a 19-year-old man from Nyama Village, Chief Kazangarare, Hurungwe, has been sentenced to prison for unlawful entry and theft, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is reporting.

Hardlife Tomu was convicted by the Karoi Magistrates’ Court after breaking into a shop on the night of 9 January 2025.

According to court records, the incident occurred at approximately 10:00 PM, just an hour after the shop owner had locked up for the day. Tomu smashed a window using a stone to gain entry into the premises. Once inside, he stole various groceries before fleeing the scene. A tip-off from the community led to his arrest three days later.

In court, Tomu was sentenced to 10 months’ imprisonment. However, 4 months were suspended for a period of 5 years, provided he does not commit a similar offence. Additionally, another 2 months were suspended on the condition that he compensates the complainant for the stolen goods. Ultimately, Tomu will serve 4 months in prison.
