Nicknamed “The Evergreen State” and located in America’s Pacific Northwest region, the State of Washington shipped US$57.8 billion worth of exported products around the world in 2024.

That dollar metric results from a 7.6% increase from $53.7 billion four years earlier in 2021.

Year over year, the overall value of Washington’s exports fell via a -5.4% slowdown compared to $61.1 billion for 2023.

Washington ranks among America’s 15 most lucrative exporters by state, well behind leaders including Texas, California, New York state, Louisiana and Illinois.

The value of Washington state’s exports equals about 2.8% of the United States’ overall exported products for 2024 worth $2.065 trillion. That percentage represents a retreat from 3% for the prior year.

Washington’s exported products represent 6.8% of the state’s total economic output or nominal Gross Domestic Product ($854.7 billion in 2024).

Given Washington’s population of 7.958 million people in 2024, its $57.8 billion in 2024 exports translates to roughly $7,250 for every resident in the Evergreen State. That dollar metric lags the average $7,850 one year earlier during 2023.

Washington state’s unemployment rate was 4.4% in February 2025, down from 4.6% one year earlier per YCharts.

The following export products represent the highest dollar value in Washington global shipments during 2024. Also shown is the percentage share each export category represents in terms of overall exports from Washington.

Figures are shown at the more granular six-digit Harmonized Tariff System code level, for more precise product identification.

  1. Civilian aircraft or aircraft engines, parts: US$17.4 billion (30% of Washington’s total exports)
  2. Soya beans: $4.8 billion (8.3%)

More Key Facts about Washington’s International Trade

Washington State incurred an overall -US$4.32 billion deficit exporting and importing products during 2024. That dollar amount reflects a -15.7% drop from the -$5.13 billion deficit one year earlier in 2023.

Another way of saying surplus or deficit is positive or negative net exports. In a nutshell, the term “net exports” quantifies the amount by which foreign spending on a state’s goods or services exceeds or lags that same state’s spending on foreign goods or services.

Below are Washington’s top 10 import products highlighting the state’s highest spending on foreign-made goods in 2024.

  1. Crude petroleum oils: $7.1 billion (11.4% of Washington’s total imports)
  2. Mid-sized automobiles (piston engine): $4.8 billion (7.7%)
  3. Natural gas (gaseous state): $2.4 billion (3.9%)
  4. Automobiles (spark ignition and electric engine): $1.9 billion (3.1%)
  5. Large automobiles (piston engine): $1.48 billion (2.4%)
  6. Wheeled toys (tricycles, scooters, pedal cars, carriages): $1.46 billion (2.4%)
  7. Automobiles (electric engine only): $1.1 billion (1.7%)
  8. Enriched uranium: $1 billion (1.6%)
  9. Video game consoles, machinery: $761 million (1.2%)
  10. Live cattle (excluding purebred): $512.2 million (0.8%)

Historically Washington has had to endure negative net exports in the international trade of crude petroleum oils, automobiles and gas. In turn, these cashflows indicate Washington’s strong competitive global disadvantages under these product categories.
